The University of Regina Cougars have welcomed a talented sister duo, Kyu and Izzi Fust, from Winnipeg to their basketball team. The last time the Cougars had sisters playing for the team was in 2018, with Kyia and Kyanna Giles who helped the team earn a national bronze medal. Kyu, the elder sister, was named player of the year in Manitoba during her Grade 12 year, and Izzi followed suit the next year. Head coach Dave Taylor acknowledges the talent that both sisters bring to the team, with Kyu excelling on the defensive end and Izzi bringing offensive prowess.
Kyu Fust had a great rookie season with the Cougars last year, where she had the opportunity to learn from veteran player Cara Misskey. Despite having an excellent mentor, Kyu missed playing alongside her sister, as they had previously played together at Dakota Collegiate. Having Izzi on the team now provides Kyu with a sense of comfort and familiarity on the court. The close bond between the Fust sisters adds an extra dynamic to their team dynamic and chemistry.
While it was expected that once Kyu committed to playing for Regina, Izzi would follow suit, it was not a given. Izzi had multiple offers from schools across the country, but ultimately chose Regina. Izzi was drawn to Regina’s successful season and wanted to be a part of a team where she could see her sister’s growth and development firsthand. Both sisters bring different skill sets to the team, with Kyu focusing on defense and Izzi contributing more to the offensive end.
Coach Taylor is excited about the potential that the Fust sisters bring to the team and is looking forward to seeing them play together in the upcoming season. Kyu’s shutdown defending skills and scoring ability, combined with Izzi’s offensive prowess, provide a well-rounded dynamic for the Cougars. The sisters’ close bond and shared basketball background have the potential to enhance the team’s performance and cohesion on the court. Their presence adds another layer of talent and chemistry to the University of Regina Cougars basketball team.
