Authorities have announced the capture of Lenton Vanburen, the sixth fugitive to escape from a New Orleans jail, confirming his arrest in Baton Rouge. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill shared the news on X, stating that Vanburen was initially incarcerated for multiple offenses, including parole violation and possession of a firearm as a felon. Following his escape on May 16, among a group of ten inmates, Vanburen will now face additional charges related to his escape from the Orleans Parish jail.
Before Vanburen’s capture, law enforcement had apprehended Corey Boyd, with the recapture of other escaped inmates also noted. The list of those recaptured includes Kendell Myles, Robert Moody, Dkenan Dennis, and Gary Price. These arrests highlight ongoing efforts by authorities to locate and return the remaining escapees, amplifying community concerns about public safety.
The escape not only prompted action against the fugitives but also led to arrests of several individuals allegedly aiding them. Among those arrested were family members of Vanburen, including his father, Lenton Vanburen Sr., and others like Tyshanea “Minnie” Randolph and Angel McKey. The connections among these accomplices underline a broader network potentially involved in the escape.
Charges have also been filed against individuals who reportedly assisted the fugitives in various capacities, including cash transactions via a cellphone app. For instance, Connie Weeden, 59, was charged with being an accessory after the fact for allegedly supplying money to an inmate, strengthening the allegations of complicity in the escape event.
As of now, several fugitives remain at large, raising alarms among local authorities and the public. These individuals include Jermaine Donald, Antoine Massey, Derrick Groves, and Leo O. Tate Sr., each facing serious criminal charges, ranging from murder to motor vehicle theft. Officials have repeatedly warned the public that these men are armed and dangerous, stressing the need for caution.
The ongoing investigation into this jailbreak underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in managing both the inmates and any complicity within the community. As recaptures continue and public awareness grows, authorities are determined to bring the remaining escapees back into custody. Further updates regarding both the fugitives’ statuses and additional charges stemming from the jailbreak are expected in the coming days.
