Many locals in the region are advocating for a reinstatement of statehood, believing that it would lead to improvements, especially in the economic sector. Residents feel that with statehood, the region would have the ability to raise its own funding and allocate capital where local representatives see fit. The hope is that this would result in more job opportunities for the youth population, which currently faces a high level of unemployment.

Job creation is a major concern for voters in the region, with a significant portion of the youth population remaining unemployed. Local residents like Mohammad Shahkar and Shoaib believe that the promise of more jobs and investments with statehood could lead to the establishment of new businesses, factories, industries, and schools, ultimately providing increased employment opportunities for the community. Unemployment has been an ongoing issue in the region, dating back to when local parties like the National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party were in power.

Despite the challenges, government data indicates that the region’s economy grew at 8% in the 2022-2023 financial year, surpassing the national average. The region’s tourism industry has also been on the rise, with a steady increase in tourist arrivals over the years. However, some local businesses, particularly in the handicraft sector, have reported sluggish sales in recent years. Shop owners like Mohammad Adil Shah and Mohammad Nayeem Mir have expressed hopes for increased tourism and business opportunities in the region.

Many residents feel that the region has not fully recovered from past natural calamities like floods, which have impacted sales for local businesses. While the environment in Kashmir has improved, there is a consensus among locals that more efforts are needed to attract tourists and boost business activities. The expectation is that with statehood, the region would be better equipped to address economic challenges, create more job opportunities, and enhance overall growth and development.
