Study Reveals Summer as Peak Divorce Season: ‘Record Number of Singles’

Divorced Girl Summer: A Trend on the Rise

Recent data from SplitUp, a divorce navigation app, highlights a significant uptick in divorce-related inquiries during the summer months. Analyzing Google Trends from June 2020 to June 2025, the app reported an astounding 4,950% increase in searches for “divorce lawyer” over the last three months, marking the highest surge in five years. Traditionally, the first Monday of the year, known as “Divorce Day,” sees a spike in divorce decisions following the holiday season, but this study suggests a shift towards summer as a crucial period for couples contemplating separation.

In June 2024 alone, searches for divorce lawyers soared to 30,600, representing a 13% rise from January of the same year. This seasonal trend can be attributed to various psychological and practical factors, according to psychologist Dr. Danielle Forshee. She notes that increased sunlight during the summer can lead to a heightened awareness of personal situations, prompting many to reconsider their relationships. Moreover, summer allows for a smoother transition for families, especially if children are involved. With schools closed, families have time to adjust emotionally and logistically to new living arrangements.

The quieter summer work environment further facilitates this process. As businesses often slow down during these months due to vacations and reduced inquiries, couples can enjoy a more flexible schedule, giving them the necessary space to navigate their post-divorce routines. This phenomenon isn’t confined to the United States; countries such as Singapore, South Africa, Canada, and the United Kingdom are also experiencing similar trends, indicating a significant global shift in how relationships evolve during the warmer months.

For couples seeking to strengthen their marriages and avoid the pitfalls that lead to divorce, experts emphasize the importance of prioritizing familial relationships. Padideh Jafari, founder of Jafari Law & Mediation Office, asserts that career ambitions should never take precedence over personal relationships. Additionally, the impact of social media cannot be underestimated, with Jafari warning that platforms may instigate temptations that breed discontent within marriages. Instead of looking outward for validation, couples should focus on nurturing their unions, akin to maintaining their “own lawn” to cultivate happiness together.

The urgency to rush into romantic decisions can also lead couples down the path to divorce, Jafari advises. Many individuals feel pressured to solidify their relationships quickly, but taking the time to experience life together through various seasons can significantly strengthen their bond. By understanding that love and commitment require patience and effort, couples can better prepare for a successful partnership that withstands the test of time.

As “Divorced Girl Summer” emerges as a recognized trend, it serves as a reminder for couples to reassess their relationships. While the summer may ignite new beginnings for some, it also emphasizes the importance of communication and dedication for those wishing to stay committed. Recognizing common mistakes and valuing the intricacies of marriage can make all the difference in cultivating a lasting and fulfilling relationship. The insights provided by experts urge individuals to seek harmony within their marriages and avoid the distractions that may lead them toward separation.
