Teen Murder Suspect Engages Police in ‘Wild Goose Chase’ Following Paddleboarder’s Death in Coastal Town: Report

In Maine, a tragic incident has unfolded involving the murder of 48-year-old Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart, whose body was found on a remote island after a solo paddleboarding trip. The Office of the Maine Attorney General confirmed that Stewart died from strangulation and blunt force trauma. This shocking event has left locals in fear, as the teenager accused of the crime led police on a “wild goose chase” through the area, raising suspicions about safety at the traditionally peaceful Mic Mac Campground, where both the victim and the suspect had been staying.

Stewart’s untimely death has created a community uproar, particularly as it is unexpected for a place typically characterized by its serenity. Katharine Lunt, the owner of the campground, expressed disbelief at the violent crime occurring in such a locale, noting how members of the community were initially searching for an adult perpetrator, unaware that the accused was a minor. Lunt reviewed surveillance footage obsessively to find any signs of trouble and to ensure the safety of her campers.

The teenage suspect, who was reportedly on a family trip to the campground, seemed at first like a helpful participant in the community. He offered assistance to fellow campers, engaged with pets, and even took part in crafting wooden items. His behavior purportedly remained calm and normal throughout the extensive two-week search for Stewart’s murderer. He provided misleading information to authorities, leading them away from the actual murder scene, which only raised further concerns once he was identified as a suspect.

As the investigation progressed, police spoke with the teenager for hours and gathered substantial evidence through surveillance footage. Lunt recalled noticing the suspect’s return to land just prior to sunset on the evening of the crime, marking him as a crucial figure in the investigation. As the community grappled with the horrific nature of the crime, there was a collective sense of disbelief that a child could commit such an act in their midst.

After the arrest, the suspect entered a denial to the charge during a court appearance and is currently being held in a youth detention facility. The state attorney general’s office is pushing to try him as an adult, which would subject him to a potential maximum sentence of 25 years to life if convicted. This has led to an ongoing discussion about juvenile justice and the circumstances surrounding the alleged crime, haunting the community already dealing with the emotional aftermath of Stewart’s death and the stark reality of local safety being compromised.

Meanwhile, the memories of Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart continue to resonate among her loved ones. Described as a fun, loyal friend and an avid fisher and carpenter, her passing has left a significant void. Friends like Bethany Leach Parmley celebrate her vibrant spirit, emphasizing how deeply she affected those around her. As authorities pursue the investigation and community fears linger, the connectedness of the residents stands in stark contrast to the horrifying incident, showcasing their resilience amidst tragedy.
