The Pro-Trump Fake News Industry Abroad Shifts Focus to American Patriotism

In the world of Facebook, the American theme is big business. Many pages, with titles like Proud American and We Are America, boast American patriotism but are actually run by foreign click farmers, many from Macedonia. These click farmers use AI to generate clickbaity content such as prayers for American soldiers and generic narratives, linking out to AI-generated articles filled with sexual advertisements. This fake Americanness is lucrative because these pages get paid each time someone clicks on their links, with American clicks being highly valuable in the advertising world. Despite Meta taking down 67 such pages, they collectively had over 9 million followers, surpassing major news outlets like the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.

The use of AI has enabled these click farms to produce vast amounts of low-quality or fake news. Pages have begun using generic AI-generated imagery to appeal to American audiences, with some posts receiving high engagement. When fed through an AI-based text detector, some articles from these pages were found to have a high probability of being generated by AI. While Meta spokesperson Margarita Franklin confirmed that these pages violated the platform’s rules on inauthentic behavior and were taken down, there are concerns about the potential influence these pages could have in shaping people’s views, especially in geopolitical contexts.

These American-themed pages, while still featuring some political content, have shifted towards more formulaic tabloid stories and non-political narratives. Strategies employed by these pages to boost engagement include using images and memes summarizing the gist of an article, posting animals to trigger emotional responses, and adapting to changes in Facebook’s algorithm. The removal of these pages highlights the challenge platforms face in addressing inauthentic behavior and maintaining transparency in terms of the origins of page creators.

The use of AI in creating and promoting content on social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube has raised concerns about the spread of misinformation and the manipulation of audiences. Click farmers, like those operating from Macedonia, have exploited these platforms to generate revenue through low-quality content and fake news. While platforms are starting to take action against such behavior, there is a need for increased transparency and regulation to combat the proliferation of inauthentic pages and protect users from deceptive practices.

As platforms continue to grapple with the challenges posed by click farms and fake news, the role of AI in content creation and audience manipulation remains a critical issue. While some individuals, like advisor Parveen Kumar Shah, exploit AI to build audiences and maximize profits, others, like former Facebook data scientist Jeff Allen, call for platforms to revamp their algorithms to discourage sensationalist content. The murky world of click farms and fake news highlights the need for greater oversight and accountability in the digital landscape to protect users and combat misinformation.
