The Italian navy’s Amerigo Vespucci, a renowned tall ship and training vessel, recently completed an extensive around-the-world voyage before embarking on a tour of Italy’s principal ports. The ship departed from Genoa on July 1, 2023, and after nearly two years, it returned to Italy, docking in Trieste in March. Following its return, the Vespucci commenced an 18-stop tour scheduled to conclude on June 10. This journey will not only take the ship to some of Italy’s most significant ports but will also include stops in Durres, Albania, and Valletta, Malta. A key feature of this Mediterranean phase is the “Italy Village” exhibition, which aims to educate visitors about the ship, Italian culture, and the maritime heritage that symbolizes unity within the nation.

As part of its mission, the Vespucci serves as a unique educational platform, allowing cadets from the Naval Academy to train onboard. Between stops at Brindisi and Reggio Calabria, as well as Livorno and Genoa, first-class cadets participate in hands-on learning experiences aboard the ship. Additionally, young sailors aged 12 to 17 are included in this educational initiative through a collaboration with the Italian Sailing Federation. Captain Giuseppe Lai, who once sailed on the Vespucci as a cadet, reflects on the nostalgic experience of returning as captain, emphasizing the lasting impact it has on young sailors and their growth. He expresses gratitude for the ship’s continued ability to inspire and impart vital lessons to the next generation of naval officers.

The Vespucci’s round-the-world tour was remarkable, spanning 30 countries over 20 months and attracting more than 400,000 visitors. It stands out as one of the most beautiful experiences for a navy commander, particularly significant given that in its 94-year history, the vessel has completed this voyage only twice. Captain Lai highlighted the privilege of such an undertaking, which enables cultural exchange while promoting Italy on a global stage. The journey serves not only to showcase the ship’s capabilities but also to foster international understanding and appreciation of Italian maritime heritage.

Constructed in 1930 at the Regio Cantiere Navale di Castellammare di Stabia shipyard, the Amerigo Vespucci was officially launched in February 1931 and entered service with the Regia Marina shortly thereafter. Since its inception, the ship has played a crucial role in training Italy’s naval officers while symbolizing the nation’s maritime prowess globally. Its enduring motto, “Not he who begins but he who perseveres,” has become a proverbial phrase that reflects the resilience and dedication embodied by the vessel and its crew throughout the years.

The Amerigo Vespucci is a magnificent structure, measuring 101 meters in length and more than 15 meters wide. The ship features three masts and a staggering 2,635 square meters of sails, crafted from steel for its hull and teak for the decks, with interior details made from precious woods. A significant modernization occurred in 2016, equipping the vessel with a new diesel-electric propulsion system. Nevertheless, true to its sailing legacy, the ship still primarily relies on wind power whenever feasible, staying true to its traditional maritime roots.

At 94 years old, the Amerigo Vespucci holds the distinction of being the longest-serving ship in the Italian navy. Its continuous operation and educational endeavors highlight its invaluable role in fostering naval traditions and training future generations of sailors. Through its current tour and past accomplishments, the Vespucci embodies a rich maritime legacy, symbolizing the connection between Italy and its deep-rooted naval history. As it reaches various ports, it offers a unique blend of exploration, education, and cultural interaction, emphasizing the enduring significance of the sea as both a unifying force and a source of inspiration for all who venture upon it.
