As the Christmas holiday and New Year approach, millions of Americans will come together with their loved ones to celebrate. However, hundreds of thousands of American men and women in uniform will be spending the holidays away from their families in various parts of the world. As of June, there were 165,830 U.S. service members deployed across the Middle East, Indo-Pacific region, and Europe. Recent unrest in the Middle East has likely increased this number, not including those working at U.S. bases over the holidays or civilian personnel on overseas contracts.
In the Middle East, around 43,000 troops are stationed, which is an increase from the usual 34,000 due to recent unrest and conflicts such as the war between Israel and Iranian proxy forces Hamas and Hezbollah. The Pentagon announced the movement of troops into Cyprus to prepare for escalating tensions in Lebanon. Additionally, it was revealed that there are actually 2,100 troops in Syria, not the 900 previously claimed, with another 1,000 in Iraq working to combat ISIS. In Europe, U.S. forces are stationed to support NATO and deter Russian aggression, with major deployments in Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
In Asia, U.S. forces are working with allies to conduct joint exercises and coordinate on countering the threat of China. Major areas of deployment in Asia include South Korea, Japan, and Guam. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin expressed gratitude to the deployed U.S. troops over the holiday season, acknowledging the difficulties of being far away from loved ones during this time. He emphasized that military families are the foundation of America’s strength and recognized the sacrifices made by both service members and their families.
