Several lots of oysters from brands Fanny Bay, Sunseeker, and Cloudy Bay sold by Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC have been recalled in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario following a suspected norovirus outbreak in British Columbia. These oysters were harvested and processed in early December, with some as early as November 27th. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued the recall due to possible norovirus contamination and is currently investigating the issue which may lead to more products being recalled. Canadians are advised not to consume the recalled oysters and to return them to the place of purchase or discard them.

The recall comes after an outbreak of norovirus-like gastrointestinal illnesses in British Columbia where 64 cases were reported between November 1st and December 18th. These cases were linked to the consumption of raw oysters from restaurants and local retailers. Symptoms reported included diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain, with some individuals seeking medical attention in emergency departments. Although there have been no hospital admissions reported, health authorities are warning the public about the risks of norovirus spreading through contaminated food like oysters.

Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause stomach issues such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and cramps. These viruses are easily spread through contact with infected individuals’ stool or vomit. In the case of oysters, they can become contaminated with the virus if they are in water polluted with sewage before being harvested. Symptoms of norovirus can appear as early as 12 hours after exposure but may take up to 48 hours to develop. While most people recover within a few days, severe cases may require hospitalization and intravenous treatment.

The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation in response to the suspected norovirus outbreak associated with the recalled oysters. This investigation aims to identify the source of contamination and prevent further cases. Canadians are advised to follow safe food handling practices and to avoid consuming raw oysters that may be contaminated. If individuals have consumed the recalled oysters and experience symptoms of norovirus, they should seek medical attention immediately for proper management and treatment.

It is essential for consumers to be aware of food recalls and potential contamination issues to protect themselves and their families from foodborne illnesses like norovirus. By staying informed about recalls and following proper food safety practices, individuals can reduce their risk of falling ill due to contaminated food. Regular updates from health authorities and the CFIA can help Canadians make informed decisions about the food they consume and prevent outbreaks of illnesses like norovirus. Awareness and vigilance are key components in maintaining food safety and preventing the spread of foodborne diseases.
