The “Connections: Sports Edition,” which made its debut on February 9—Super Bowl Sunday—has transitioned out of its beta phase, signaling the game’s successful integration into the sports puzzle landscape. This edition of Connections is part of The Athletic, a subscription-based sports journalism platform owned by The New York Times. Unlike other games, it does not appear in the NYT Games app but is accessible through The Athletic’s dedicated app or available to play online for free. The puzzle has attracted a steady following, ensuring its continued release for enthusiasts.

Today’s Connections puzzle presents varying levels of challenge, organized into four thematic groups. The easiest grouping, labeled the “yellow group,” relates to individuals typically involved in contract negotiations. The subsequent groups—green, blue, and purple—reflect increasingly complex themes ranging from Formula 1 teams to notable father-son duos in baseball, culminating with NBA players renowned for securing championships with three different teams. Such varied themes cater to a wide audience, enhancing engagement through recognizable sports references.

Specifically, in the yellow group, players engaged in contract negotiations such as agents, general managers, owners, and players make up the answers, emphasizing the collaborative and often contentious nature of sports contracts. Meanwhile, the green group features prominent Formula 1 teams—Aston Martin, Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes—each a powerhouse in the racing world. This categorization deepens players’ connection to the sports industry through familiar names and brands.

The blue group highlights celebrated baseball father-son duos, showcasing the legacy aspect of the sport. Figures like Bonds, Griffey, Guerrero, and Tatis illustrate how talent and passion for baseball often transcend generations, providing a sentimental touch for fans. This grouping not only invites nostalgic reminiscence but also emphasizes the importance of familial bonds within the context of professional athletics.

In contrast, the purple group’s focus on NBA players who have triumphed with three different teams presents a more nuanced and historical challenge. The answers—Green, Horry, James, and Salley—serve to remind players of the dynamic career trajectories of athletes, underlining the strategic moves that define professional basketball today. This theme also highlights the evolving nature of team dynamics and player legacies in the NBA.

Overall, the Connections: Sports Edition successfully intertwines entertainment and sports knowledge, providing players with a fun, interactive experience that reflects both historical and contemporary elements in various sports. Its structured themes not only cater to diverse interests but also encourage a deeper understanding of the intricate relationships and legacies within the sports world. This blend of challenge and familiarity makes Connections a rewarding addition to the repertoire of sports enthusiasts and puzzle lovers alike.
