Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the conversation around European security has shifted dramatically, as large-scale war has returned to European soil. One significant aspect of this shift is the renewed focus on Germany’s military, the Bundeswehr. The shortage of personnel in the armed forces has become a pressing issue, leading to renewed discussions about the possibility of reintroducing compulsory military service, which was suspended in 2011 due to cost concerns. While conscription is not set to be reinstated immediately, the debate continues to spark interest.
One individual who has emerged as a prominent figure in the discussion around the Bundeswehr is 31-year-old soldier and content creator David Matei. Matei, who appeared on the German talk show panel Hart aber Fair, highlighted the flaws, challenges, and problems within the Bundeswehr, but emphasized his belief in the importance of defending Germany, stating, “Germany is worth it!”. As an active-duty soldier and influencer, Matei’s goal is to bring security policy closer to Generation Z, using social media to bridge the gap between young people and the armed forces.
Reflecting on his decision to join the Bundeswehr at the age of 18, Matei shared his journey from initial skepticism to a sense of purpose and dedication. Despite having no personal or family connection to the military, he was drawn to the sense of adventure and opportunity for personal growth that the Bundeswehr offered. Over time, Matei’s perspective on military service evolved, as he recognized the significance of serving his country and defending the free and democratic constitutional order. This sense of purpose led him to extend his service to 15 years.
The perception of the Bundeswehr has also evolved in Germany, particularly following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Matei noted a shift from “friendly disinterest” to “interested friendliness” towards the armed forces. He described how he has received positive gestures of appreciation from the public, contrasting with the experiences of being treated more positively as a German soldier in the United States. Matei emphasized the importance of critical engagement with the military in a democracy while also acknowledging the changing attitudes and curiosity among younger generations.
Discussing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Matei expressed his commitment to the Bundeswehr and emphasized that fighting for another army is not an option for him as an active soldier. He recounted a conversation with a Ukrainian soldier who had received minimal training before being deployed to the frontline, highlighting the stark reality and challenges faced by soldiers in conflict zones. Matei reflected on the concept of deterrence and how the Bundeswehr’s preparedness for war contributes to preventing conflict.
In response to the question of whether he would choose to join the Bundeswehr again in the current security situation if he were 18 today, Matei expressed a resounding affirmation. He acknowledged the evolving threats faced by soldiers, particularly in relation to drone technology, which has added a new layer of complexity and danger to modern warfare. Despite the risks involved, Matei reiterated his dedication to serving his country and the importance of addressing security issues through open and informed discussions. Through his experiences and interactions, Matei strives to promote understanding and dialogue around security policy and the role of the Bundeswehr in Germany.
