The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recently revealed that nearly 9,000 people died last year while attempting to cross borders, marking the fifth consecutive year of record-breaking fatalities. However, the agency believes that the actual death toll could be much higher due to unreported or undocumented deaths. Asia and the Mediterranean Sea were the regions with the highest number of reported migrant deaths. Specifically, thousands of individuals perish each year while trying to cross the Mediterranean in hopes of reaching Europe. Last year alone, over 2,200 migrants either died or went missing in this perilous sea route.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been working to reduce the number of migrant boat departures through agreements with North African countries. These efforts have led to a significant decrease in the number of migrants arriving in Italy, with 66,317 reaching the country last year compared to 157,651 in 2023. Despite this progress, the Atlantic Ocean passage between West Africa and Spain’s Canary Islands remains one of the most dangerous migration routes. With nearly 47,000 people successfully making the crossing to the archipelago last year, many from countries like Mali, Senegal, and Morocco, it has become a hotspot for migrant deaths.

Spain’s interior ministry reported that almost 11,000 migrants have arrived in the country by sea this year, representing a 21% decrease from the same period in the previous year. The migration route through the Darién Gap, the crossing between Colombia and Panama, also saw a record number of deaths last year. Additionally, the Caribbean experienced an unprecedented loss of 341 lives, with 233 fatalities in Europe. These grim statistics highlight the dangers and challenges faced by migrants seeking a better life through treacherous journeys.

The news of the record death toll comes amid the IOM’s decision to suspend numerous “lifesaving” programs across the globe and lay off hundreds of employees due to US-led aid cuts. These cuts are expected to have a significant impact on vulnerable migrants worldwide, potentially hindering critical assistance and support services. The lack of funding and resources for these essential programs could further exacerbate the risks faced by migrants, particularly those embarking on dangerous journeys in search of safety and opportunity.

In light of the staggering number of deaths among migrants worldwide, the IOM emphasized the tragic consequences of inadequate data on the risks faced by migrants. Many deaths remain unidentified each year, leaving families in despair and authorities struggling to provide timely and effective responses. The organization called for greater efforts to address the root causes of migration, improve data collection on migrant deaths, and enhance lifesaving interventions to protect vulnerable individuals on the move. With the ongoing challenges and uncertainties surrounding global migration, urgent action and cooperation are needed to ensure the safety and well-being of migrants as they navigate perilous routes in search of a better future.
