US Attorney for NY John Sarcone asserts that knife-wielding undocumented migrant who threatened him ‘was going to kill someone’

On a recent incident in Albany, New York, U.S. Attorney John Sarcone recounted a harrowing encounter with an armed illegal migrant named Saul Morales-Garcia, leading to serious charges. Sarcone, who serves as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York, found himself in a life-threatening situation when he spotted Morales-Garcia, a 40-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador who had been previously deported. On Tuesday night, after concluding his office duties, Sarcone noticed Morales-Garcia outside the Hilton Hotel. The encounter escalated when Morales-Garcia aggressively lunged at Sarcone, threatening him with a knife and gesturing in a manner that implied intent to harm.

Sarcone expressed his judgment that Morales-Garcia posed a serious danger to himself and others, fearing that—had he not intervened—someone would have likely been harmed. During the confrontation, Sarcone observed Morales-Garcia behaving erratically and sensed potential violence. He opted to keep a distance while monitoring Morales-Garcia’s actions, which soon escalated into a frantic situation. As Morales-Garcia charged at him, knife in hand, Sarcone attempted to escape into the hotel lobby. However, despite his initial retreat, the alleged aggressor continued exhibiting threatening behavior, raising concerns about the safety of those around.

In a moment of urgent responsibility, Sarcone quickly notified local law enforcement while attempting to keep Morales-Garcia within sight. His decision to return to confront the individual served as a testament to his sense of duty as a federal prosecutor, emphasizing the importance of protecting the public. Sarcone’s declaration underscored his belief that, despite the fear for his own safety, it was essential to prevent Morales-Garcia from potentially harming others. This sentiment resonated strongly in the aftermath of the encounter as news of the incident spread.

Upon the arrival of law enforcement, Morales-Garcia was promptly taken into custody. Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple praised Sarcone’s actions, suggesting that his quick response could have saved lives. Following this incident, it was revealed that Morales-Garcia has been living in the United States illegally since 2021, with a criminal history spanning multiple states. His prior deportation and ongoing illegal status raised further questions about immigration enforcement and public safety in New York.

In the wake of the terrifying confrontation, Sarcone reported receiving a call from Governor Kathy Hochul expressing concern over the incident. Their conversation touched upon the broader implications of sanctuary city laws and their effectiveness, reflecting growing tensions among lawmakers about immigration policies. Sarcone conveyed his belief that the current regulations may not be serving their intended protective functions, an issue likely to fuel political discussions moving forward.

Following his arrest, Morales-Garcia faced multiple charges, including attempted second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and menacing, each highlighting the seriousness of his threats and actions. The court remanded him without bail during his initial hearing, marking a critical moment in a case that has drawn significant public and political attention. Sarcone’s ordeal not only illustrated the potential dangers faced by law enforcement officers but also underscored pressing conversations about immigration laws and community safety measures in New York.
