On July 13, 2025, a federal investigation commenced at Vancouver International Airport following a small engine fire onboard a WestJet flight arriving from Tampa, Florida. The incident occurred as the aircraft was arriving at the gate, alarming passengers and staff. According to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, the fire, described as a “small tailpipe fire,” took place in one of the plane’s engines after it had been shut down. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and approximately 50 passengers remained on board during the emergency response.

WestJet spokeswoman Julia Kaiser confirmed the situation, emphasizing that safety protocols were effectively implemented. The evacuation was executed using inflatable slides, ensuring that all passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft. Airport spokeswoman Chloe Reynaud noted that the fire was quickly extinguished by the plane’s onboard systems, demonstrating the effectiveness of onboard safety measures. First responders from the airport were also present, providing additional support during the incident.

Following the incident, the aircraft was swiftly taken in for maintenance, and there was no reported disruption to other flights or airport operations. This reassured both passengers and airport staff of the continued safety and functionality of Vancouver International Airport. Kaiser expressed gratitude for the prompt action of the emergency personnel, which played an essential role in ensuring passenger safety.

The efficiency of the rescue operations underscored the preparedness of airport responders in handling emergencies.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of stringent safety protocols in the aviation industry. Following the engine fire, comprehensive investigations are expected to ascertain the cause and ensure similar incidents can be prevented in the future. Continuous vigilance from both airline and airport personnel is crucial to maintaining the highest safety standards in air travel.

As investigations proceed, the focus remains on passenger safety and the effective response mechanisms in place at airports. These events reiterate the ongoing commitment to safeguarding all individuals within airport environments and ensuring a swift resolution in case of any emergency situations. Overall, the incident culminated in a swift evacuation with no injuries, reflecting positively on the emergency response systems at play.
