Why Did This B.C. Community Build a Border Fence with the U.S.?

A controversy has erupted over the installation of a chain-link fence along the western side of Point Roberts, which is located on the Canadian side of the border. The fence was put up by the City of Delta as a response to a tragic incident where a Tsawwassen senior crossed into Point Roberts and subsequently died. The incident raised concerns about border safety and led to the decision to install the fence. While some residents are bewildered by the sudden appearance of the fence, others see it as a necessary measure to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The installation of the fence has sparked discussions about the implications of having a physical barrier along a small part of the world’s longest undefended border. Some residents believe that the fence enhances community safety by minimizing the risk of individuals accidentally crossing the border. However, others argue that the Treaty of Ghent from the 1800s prohibits any impediments within 10 feet of the Canada-U.S. border, raising questions about the legality of the fence’s construction. The timing of the fence’s installation has also raised suspicions, with some likening it to actions taken by former U.S. President Donald Trump, despite it being a Canadian initiative.

While the City of Delta maintains that the fence was erected in response to a specific incident and is intended to prevent future tragedies, not everyone is on board with the decision. Despite the International Boundary Commission stating that they did not authorize the work and are investigating the matter, some Tsawwassen residents support the fence as a necessary safety measure. The Tsawwassen First Nation has chosen not to comment on the issue, further underscoring the complexity and sensitivity surrounding the border fence installation. The debates and differing perspectives regarding the fence highlight the broader issues of border security and management along the Canada-U.S. border.

The presence of the chain-link fence at Point Roberts has drawn attention to the challenges of border security and safety in a region that is known for its peaceful and cooperative relationship between Canada and the United States. The fence represents a physical barrier that reflects concerns about unauthorized border crossings and the potential risks involved. While some residents view the fence as a practical solution to prevent accidents or misunderstandings, others are wary of the implications of erecting obstacles along a historically open and undefended border.

As discussions continue about the fence at Point Roberts, it is clear that the issue goes beyond a simple physical barrier. The installation of the fence has broader implications for the relationship between Canada and the United States, as well as the local communities that straddle the border. The balancing act between security measures and maintaining the spirit of cooperation and openness along the border is a complex one, requiring thoughtful consideration and dialogue among all stakeholders involved. Ultimately, the fence serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges and complexities of managing borders in a world where safety and security are paramount concerns.
