Wisconsin Couple Charged in Alleged Cyanide Scheme to Kill Ex-Girlfriends; Agents Hospitalized During Search

A disturbing case has unfolded in Wisconsin involving a couple, Paul VanDuyne and Andrea Whitaker, who have been charged with attempting to murder two women using cyanide, a highly toxic poison. Prosecutors claim that the duo concocted a detailed plan to target VanDuyne’s ex-girlfriends, with multiple law enforcement investigators falling ill from exposure to the poison during the investigation. This case sheds light on the lengths some individuals may go to in personal vendettas, illustrating not only the potential dangers of toxic substances but also the critical importance of swift law enforcement action in preventing further harm.

The narrative began to unravel when VanDuyne allegedly broke into a woman’s car in a Costco parking lot in Middleton, contaminating her water bottle with cyanide. Initially unaware of the tampering, the woman later noticed an unusual taste in the water. When concerned individuals alerted her to possible tampering, she brought the water bottle to the authorities, who discovered the deadly poison within it after testing the contents. This incident marked the culmination of a dangerous trend, as another woman in Rock County also experienced symptoms and was hospitalized after unknowingly consuming cyanide-tainted water from her own vehicle.

In response to these alarming events, law enforcement felt compelled to act decisively. VanDuyne was taken into custody after authorities observed him attempting to connect with one of his alleged victims, prompting them to expedite his arrest to prevent further incidents. While incarcerated, he communicated with Whitaker, seeking to have her remove incriminating items from his home. Their communications raised red flags for investigators, revealing discussions about various poisons that further implicated them in a premeditated murder plot.

Past investigations revealed that at least seven law enforcement personnel had to be hospitalized due to possible exposure to cyanide while handling evidence related to the case. This underscores the critical risks faced by investigators dealing with dangerous materials. Prosecutor William Brown noted that Whitaker’s internet history included alarming searches related to cyanide’s properties and effects, solidifying suspicions regarding her involvement in the conspiracy against VanDuyne’s former partners.

As the depth of their conspiracy came to light, the couple faced multiple charges, including attempted homicide, aggravated battery, reckless endangerment, and stalking, all involving a dangerous weapon. VanDuyne faced additional charges in Dane County, while Whitaker was accused of aiding in the plot and attempts to conceal efforts. The case not only highlights the serious legal consequences faced by the accused but also raises questions about how such dangerous intentions can manifest and the vulnerabilities of targeted individuals.

The investigation in this troubling case involved collaboration from several agencies, including the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, and even the FBI. Their joint efforts were essential in connecting the dots of this intricate plot, revealing the dangerous intersection of personal grievances and criminal intent. As the legal process unfolds, the community reflects on the need for increased awareness of toxic substances and the vital role of law enforcement in safeguarding public safety.
