WNBA Players Rank Caitlin Clark 9th Among All-Star Guards, Despite Leading Fan Vote

The WNBA has officially announced the eight remaining starters for the 2025 All-Star Game, with Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever and Napheesa Collier from the Minnesota Lynx serving as captains. The voting process for All-Star starters involves three groups: fans, media, and players, which influences the overall rankings significantly. While Clark topped the fan voting and ranked third among media votes, she surprisingly placed ninth among her fellow players, raising questions about her performance this season after an injury-plagued run. Despite this, fan support propelled her to second overall in rankings, indicating her popularity among fans.

Dallas Wings rookie Paige Bueckers emerged as the top guard after a commendable ranking across all voting categories, suggesting a growing recognition of her talent among various groups. Other players like Allisha Gray, Skylar Diggins, and Sabrina Ionescu ranked higher than Clark in the player votes, with Gray particularly distinguished as first in both media and player rankings. This disparity in rankings is noteworthy, as it highlights differing perceptions of player performance within the league, contrasting fan enthusiasm with the on-court evaluations by players and media.

Clark’s struggle with injuries has likely influenced her reduced ranking among players, having participated in only nine games this season, which is just over half of the Fever’s schedule thus far. Her ongoing injury issues have been compounded by a recent downturn in shooting performance, particularly from three-point range. Despite these challenges, Clark has maintained solid averages in points, assists, and rebounds, demonstrating her valuable contribution to the team when on the court, though her assist tally trails only Alyssa Thomas of the Phoenix Mercury.

The competitive nature of the All-Star selections has been heightened by recent incidents on the court, including a physical altercation involving Clark during a game against the Connecticut Sun. Such moments have drawn national attention, showcasing Clark not only as a notable player but also as a figure at the center of rising tensions in league matchups. The visibility of her experiences adds an interesting dynamic to the narrative surrounding her All-Star candidacy and the overall perception of her character and competitiveness.

As captains, Clark and Collier will have the unique opportunity to draft their teams, which includes a selection of standout players like Aliyah Boston, Paige Bueckers, and Breanna Stewart, among others. This team-building exercise not only emphasizes the collaborative spirit of the All-Star Game but also allows these stars to showcase their strategic acumen. The composition of their teams will become a pivotal talking point leading up to the game and represents a chance for players to ally based on mutual respect and recognition of talent.

The reveal of the 12 reserve players selected by head coaches is eagerly awaited, further shaping the landscape of the All-Star Game. The current momentum in the WNBA, coupled with the excitement surrounding the All-Star festivities, underscores the league’s rapid growth and increasing fan engagement. As the July 19 date approaches, all eyes will be on Clark, Collier, and their selected rosters at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, setting the stage for an electrifying showcase of talent and an opportunity for these athletes to solidify their legacies in the league.
