Zelenskyy Expresses Gratitude to NATO and European Leaders for Supporting His Bid to Join Trump-Putin Summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to European leaders for their support in his push to join the upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This plea comes as Ukraine expresses concerns that a potential agreement between the U.S. and Russia could compromise its sovereignty. Zelenskyy emphasized that any resolution to the ongoing conflict must be just, underscoring the importance of European nations standing firm in their commitment to Ukraine’s peace and security.

In a joint statement, several European leaders, including those from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Finland, and the European Commission, affirmed that any diplomatic resolution involving the U.S. and Russia must prioritize the security interests of both Ukraine and Europe. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas asserted that the U.S. possesses significant leverage to compel Russia to engage earnestly in negotiations. She reiterated that Ukraine and the EU must be integral to any discussions, highlighting the collective security implications for the region.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte described the forthcoming summit as an opportunity to assess Putin’s commitment to ending the war. Both the White House and the Kremlin have acknowledged Zelenskyy’s desire to partake in the discussions, marking a potential historical moment as it would be the first meeting between him and Putin since the start of the conflict. However, despite this acknowledgment, no formal invitation for Zelenskyy has been extended thus far.

The backdrop of the summit includes ongoing threats from the U.S. to impose significant tariffs on Russia and its allies. Trump has indicated that countries like India and China, which continue to purchase discounted Russian oil, are undermining the impact of Western sanctions. In response, bipartisan lawmakers have proposed the Sanctioning Russia Act, which would impose a staggering 500% tariff on Russian oil and gas exports if Russia does not cooperate in peace negotiations or escalates the conflict further.

However, concerns arise from within Russia, where a senior member of Putin’s inner circle has warned that various nations are actively working to undermine the summit. Kirill Dmitriev, Russia’s investment envoy, highlighted the potential for countries interested in prolonging the conflict to employ diplomatic tactics or media disinformation to sabotage the talks between Trump and Putin. This assertion points to the complex geopolitical landscape surrounding the summit and the various interests at play.

As the world awaits the outcomes of this high-stakes meeting, the focus remains on ensuring that the discussions between the U.S. and Russia not only address the pressing issues of the conflict but also incorporate the voices and security concerns of Ukraine and its European allies. Zelenskyy’s determination to maintain Ukraine’s sovereignty amid international dialogues illustrates the delicate balance of power and the necessity for inclusive negotiations that uphold the rights and interests of all affected parties.
