A psychologist reveals 4 common misconceptions about love in relationships

In a 2013 study from the journal Communication Sciences, researchers found that partners often tell little white lies to each other in order to protect and maintain their relationships. These lies fall into four main categories, ranging from innocent fibs that aim to avoid confrontation to more malicious deceptions that seek to control or manipulate. Some lies are told to elicit guilt or avoid tension, while others are meant to protect the feelings or self-esteem of one’s partner.

One of the main reasons partners lie to each other is to maintain the relationship. These lies can range from avoiding arguments or stress to simply making one’s partner happy. Some lies might be told to elicit guilt in order to restore balance after a disagreement. While these lies may seem harmless on the surface, they can sometimes lead to feelings of mistrust or resentment if they are discovered.

Another reason partners lie to each other is to manage face needs, or the need to feel respected and included. These lies are told in order to spare feelings or avoid hurting one’s partner. For example, a person might exaggerate the amount of work they have done in order to save face or lie about their partner’s appearance to avoid causing hurt feelings.

Sometimes, lies are told in order to negotiate tensions between partners. For example, one partner might lie about needing personal time and space in order to avoid spending time with the other, while another might lie in order to spend more time together. These lies can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or disagreements if they are not addressed.

Some lies have more malicious purposes, such as guilt-tripping or gaining control over one’s partner. These lies can be damaging to the relationship and erode trust over time. While some lies may seem harmless in the moment, they can have long-lasting consequences if they are discovered.

In a truly loving and healthy relationship, honesty and openness are crucial. While some love lies may seem innocent or well-intentioned, it is important to evaluate the reasons behind them and consider the impact they may have on the relationship. If lies are silently infecting your relationship, it may be helpful to seek professional support in order to address underlying issues and work towards a more authentic and honest connection with your partner.
