Elon Musk Relocates X Headquarters to Texas

Elon Musk’s company X has quietly relocated its headquarters to a rural community just outside of Austin, Texas, according to new court filings. The move comes as Musk seeks to change the location of an ongoing lawsuit with former CNN anchor Don Lemon from California to Texas. The company’s new official headquarters is now located in Bastrop, a small town that is also home to SpaceX and The Boring Company. X updated its incorporation documents to reflect the Bastrop address last month, and Musk is requesting that the Lemon lawsuit be allowed to proceed in Texas to reflect the new location.

Musk had previously announced in July that he would be moving the headquarters of X and SpaceX to Austin, Texas, in response to a California law banning public schools from notifying parents about changes to their children’s gender identification. X recently closed its San Francisco office and is reportedly looking to sublease the space. The company’s 188 full-time employees in Texas, including those in Bastrop, are now located at Building 2 in Hyperloop Plaza, a Musk-owned shopping center that also houses a grocery store, hair salon, and pub. X has signed a three-year commercial lease on the property, making Musk his own landlord.

The company also has an office in Austin, but the new address in Bastrop will serve as X’s official headquarters, with plans to eventually move all employees from the Austin office to the new location. X has announced that it is hiring for trust and safety roles in Bastrop for a “Safety X Support Center.” Musk began buying land in Bastrop under an LLC called Gapped Bass in 2021, with buildings and construction sites now belonging to SpaceX and The Boring Company. Some residents of Bastrop have protested the rapid development in the area, and The Boring Company has faced fines for environmental violations.

Forbes reported in July that Musk had opened a branch of his experimental Ad Astra school in Bastrop, enrolling preschool and elementary students for the upcoming school year. The move to Bastrop marks a significant shift for X and Musk’s other ventures, as they continue to expand their presence in Texas. The company has not yet responded to requests for comment on the relocation of its headquarters and the ongoing lawsuit with Don Lemon. The future of X and its operations in Texas will be closely watched as Musk’s ventures in the state continue to grow.
