Federal agents in California have arrested Mark Lorenzo Villanueva, 28, for allegedly sending financial support to the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, Villanueva faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. A lawful permanent resident from the Philippines residing in Long Beach, California, he is accused of promoting and financially backing a group that poses threats to U.S. interests globally. The FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office emphasized that this arrest was crucial in disrupting ISIS’s operations and ideology.

According to court documents, Villanueva used social media to communicate with individuals claiming to be ISIS fighters. In these discussions, he expressed his eagerness to support the group financially and even articulated a desire to fight for ISIS. Notably, he allegedly stated, “It’s an honor to fight and die for our faith,” indicating a deep level of commitment to the terrorist organization. His intentions went further when he expressed a wish to join ISIS in the near future, demonstrating a significant threat to both national and global security.

Villanueva’s conversations also involved bomb-making, as he claimed to possess a bomb and knives. This alarming detail was substantiated when the FBI discovered what appeared to be a bomb in his bedroom during the arrest, elevating the seriousness of the situation. His communications revealed not only an ideological affinity for ISIS but also a practical willingness to engage in violent actions on behalf of the group.

Over a five-month period leading up to his arrest, Villanueva allegedly transferred a total of $1,615 through Western Union to two intermediaries who were believed to funnel the money overseas to ISIS. His discussions revealed that he was concerned about the financial needs of ISIS fighters, specifically in relation to weapons and equipment. Villanueva attempted to ensure these funds would facilitate the terrorists’ operations, highlighting his active role in supporting the organization.

The FBI’s proactive measures, along with the collaboration of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, were instrumental in intercepting Villanueva’s activities before they could escalate further. Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli emphasized the importance of addressing any support for terrorist groups, underscoring that all such activities pose serious risks to U.S. national security. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenge posed by individuals who seek to provide financial and ideological support to extremist organizations.

As investigations continue, this incident reflects broader concerns about domestic radicalization and the complexities surrounding terrorism support in the United States. Law enforcement agencies remain vigilant in their efforts to root out such threats, aiming to deter individuals from engaging with terrorist organizations. This case not only highlights the importance of monitoring financial transactions linked to extremism but also illustrates the potential for individuals to be drawn into violent ideologies via social media platforms. The commitment to prosecuting those who assist terrorists underscores a significant component of ongoing national security strategies.
