Former Michigan Prosecutor Faces Backlash for Blaming Charlie Kirk for His Own Death

A former Michigan prosecutor, Carol Siemon, faced significant backlash online for her controversial comments regarding the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA. Siemon suggested that Kirk was partially responsible for his death due to his strong pro-Second Amendment beliefs. In a post on X, she expressed her condolences but implied that Kirk’s stance on gun rights made him somewhat complicit in the violence surrounding guns, remarking that he had previously indicated he was willing to accept shootings as a cost of such freedoms. Her remarks, perceived as callous and politically charged, ignited outrage, particularly given Kirk’s recent assassination during an event at Utah Valley University.

Kirk, aged 31, was a well-known conservative activist and father of two, engaged in a national tour aimed at galvanizing political support. During an event in Orem, Utah, he was shot while answering questions from both supporters and detractors. The news of his death was met with an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans alike, all mourning the loss of a public figure dedicated to advocating for conservative values. In stark contrast, Siemon’s comments were labeled as inappropriate and insensitive, inciting a wave of criticism across social media platforms.

Among those who condemned Siemon’s statements was Tom Leonard, a former Michigan House Speaker and current gubernatorial candidate. He criticized her for “politicizing the murder” of a young family man and pointed out the hypocrisy in her position, given her record on gun crime prosecutions during her time as prosecutor. Leonard’s remarks underscore the growing frustration with politicians who seem disconnected from the realities of crime and safety, especially in a community that has struggled with gun violence. Siemon’s tenure as prosecutor was marked by controversies, including her approach to prosecuting gun offenses.

Siemon, who became the first female prosecutor of Ingham County in 2016, was often criticized for her lenient policies regarding crime. Her decisions frequently clashed with law enforcement and the judicial system, raising concerns about public safety in Lansing, which became known as one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. during her administration. Notably, her handling of felony charges against Anthony McRae, who later perpetrated the Michigan State University mass shooting, drew particular ire. Allowing McRae to plead down to a misdemeanor meant he avoided incarceration and retained his gun rights, contributing to the tragic outcome of the mass shooting.

In a notable incident from 2022, one of Siemon’s plea deals was publicly rebuked by Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, who accused her of attempting to creatively circumvent legal standards in a case involving a convicted murderer. This public back-and-forth, alongside the failures in ensuring accountability for gun crimes during her time in office, painted a troubling picture of her leadership. Siemon’s comments about Kirk his assassination further sparked debates over the responsibilities of public officials and how their actions can have far-reaching consequences that affect community safety.

The fallout from Siemon’s remarks reflects a broader discourse on gun rights, accountability, and public safety policy. Many commentators have pointed out that such tragedies should not be used for political scoring; instead, they highlight the ongoing divide in American society regarding firearms and the laws governing their use. Siemon’s account has since been deleted, but the backlash continues, symbolizing a significant moment of reckoning for those in positions of power, especially as communities grapple with the implications of gun violence and its underlying social issues. Kirk’s assassination serves as a painful reminder of the stakes involved in the debate over gun rights and the need for meaningful dialogue on gun control in America.
