Fox News Poll: Support for Deportation Varies Based on Target Groups

The ongoing crackdown on illegal immigration by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) has elicited mixed opinions among American voters, with a significant portion expressing concerns about the agency’s deportation tactics. A recent Fox News survey revealed that approximately half of the voters believe ICE is overly aggressive in its deportation efforts. While a substantial majority supports deportation, opinions differ widely on which undocumented individuals should be targeted. About 30% of those surveyed endorsed deporting all illegal immigrants, while 60% preferred focusing on those with criminal charges, and only 10% favored allowing all undocumented immigrants to remain in the country. Over the years, public sentiment has generally leaned towards deportation of illegal immigrants, indicating a nuanced and polarized landscape regarding immigration policy.

The survey highlights stark political divisions on immigration issues, revealing that Republicans are significantly more likely than Democrats to advocate for the deportation of all illegal immigrants. Approximately 54% of Republicans support this stance, compared to just 7% of Democrats. Independents showed varying opinions too, with 25% supporting total deportation. Most Democrats, 80%, and a majority of independents (60%) concur that individuals charged with crimes should be deported, while allowing others to pursue citizenship. The current policies have sparked a division on whether ICE’s actions are appropriately balanced, with 49% of respondents perceiving ICE actions as too aggressive, while about a quarter feel the agency is not assertive enough.

When investigating the primary concerns surrounding illegal immigration among voters, the predominant issue identified was the strain on government services, cited by 39% of respondents. Comparatively fewer voters expressed worry about illegal immigration inciting crime (16%), job losses for U.S. citizens (14%), terrorism (10%), and cultural shifts (9%). This focus on government burden marks a notable change compared to perceptions a decade and a half ago, when economic factors dominated concerns. Back then, a more significant number of voters feared job loss and economic impact, suggesting shifting priorities over time in public discourse concerning immigration.

Voter sentiments reflect a preference towards the Republican Party when it comes to handling immigration. In fact, by a narrow margin, voters perceive the GOP as better equipped to manage immigration issues than the Democratic Party. President Donald Trump has received mixed ratings on various issues, but he enjoys relatively higher approval for border security (56%) and immigration (48%). This popularity is underscored by a surprising 20% of Democrats expressing approval for his performance on border security, showing that his stance resonates even beyond his usual supporters.

Among Hispanic voters, their views align closely with national sentiments regarding illegal immigration. Approximately 60% support deporting undocumented individuals charged with crimes, mirroring the sentiments of the broader voter base. However, a significant 57% of Hispanic voters believe ICE is too aggressive in its enforcement actions. Interestingly, more than half of the Hispanic respondents also approved of Trump’s performance concerning border security, but expressed disapproval regarding his overall immigration policy, indicating a complex relationship with his administration’s approach.

The survey data, collected from July 18-21, 2025, by Beacon Research and Shaw & Company, polled 1,000 registered voters and highlights the multifaceted nature of American attitudes towards immigration. The findings reveal a variety of attitudes concerning the efficacy and aggressiveness of deportation efforts, emphasizing a critical assessment of ICE’s strategies and the political ramifications surrounding immigration discourse. While many Americans support structured immigration policies, their willingness to adapt these policies often depends on the specifics of implementation, raising questions about how to balance border security, humanitarian concerns, and the protection of government resources efficiently.
