GOP takes control of House, completing full control under Trump

The Republican Party has secured a majority in the House of Representatives with Rep. Juan Ciscomani’s victory in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District, giving them at least 218 seats in the new Congress. Republicans have flipped six seats in the lower chamber since Election Day, while Democrats have only gained one. The GOP’s pickups include wins in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Michigan. National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Richard Hudson declared victory, stating it is “morning again in America.”

With races still undecided, the margin of the House Republican majority come January will likely be slim. President-elect Donald Trump has chosen three GOP congressional lawmakers to serve in his incoming administration, which could impact House Speaker Mike Johnson’s majority until replacements are selected. Trump addressed members of the GOP caucus in Washington on the same day the GOP clinched the House majority, indicating Republicans plan to support his “America First agenda.”

Republicans have also gained control of the Senate by a 53-47 margin after flipping four seats in Montana, West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Senate Republicans elected Sen. John Thune as majority leader, succeeding Sen. Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving leader in chamber history. Thune will lead the conference for the next two years. The GOP’s success in both the House and Senate provides them with full control of all three branches of government when Trump takes office in January.

Chairman Richard Hudson expressed a desire to work with newly elected colleagues to support Trump’s agenda and clean up what he called the Democrat’s mess. He highlighted issues such as border security, inflation, and crime as key areas that need to be addressed. The Republican Party is focused on addressing the concerns of American citizens and supporting Trump’s policies once he is in the White House. Hudson emphasized the importance of having a Republican House majority, a new Senate majority, and Trump back in the White House for progress to be made.

In addition to their victories in both the House and Senate, Republicans have successfully secured the presidency with Trump’s win in the 2020 election. The trifecta of control over all three branches of government gives the GOP the ability to push forward with their legislative agenda. While the exact size of the House majority is still unknown, the GOP’s strong performance in various states during the election has solidified their position. With Trump’s presidency and Republican control of Congress, the party is poised to make significant changes guided by their America First platform.
