The Université de Montréal has issued guidelines for students and staff travelling to the United States for academic purposes in response to concerns about detentions and denial of entry in recent weeks. Rector Daniel Jutras says the guidelines were issued to address questions from the university community about travel to the U.S. The guidelines advise individuals to inform the institution when they are travelling, discuss potential risks, and exercise caution when crossing the Canada-U.S. border. Additionally, U.S. customs officers have the right to inspect electronic devices upon entry, so individuals are advised to protect their data and ensure devices do not contain sensitive information.

The memo also includes recommendations for individuals to change passwords if they are asked to provide them to customs. The university’s policy on international travel, adopted in 2023, covers all scholars, researchers, and students going abroad and includes considerations for various issues such as sanitary concerns and climate-related issues in regions they are visiting. While there have been no specific incidents involving the university community, the guidelines aim to provide guidance and support to students and staff travelling to the U.S.

Rector Jutras emphasized the importance of being proactive and prepared when travelling internationally. The guidelines aim to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals travelling for academic purposes, providing practical advice on how to protect data and navigate potential challenges when crossing the Canada-U.S. border. The university encourages open communication and dialogue between students and staff and the institution to address any concerns or questions regarding travel to the U.S.

The policies and recommendations outlined in the guidelines demonstrate the institution’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its students and staff when participating in academic activities abroad.

Overall, the guidelines issued by the Université de Montréal serve as a proactive response to the evolving landscape of international travel and the potential risks and challenges associated with crossing the Canada-U.S. border. By emphasizing the importance of communication, preparation, and data protection, the university aims to empower individuals to navigate travel safely and effectively. As the global context continues to change, institutions like the Université de Montréal play a crucial role in providing guidance and support to their community members engaging in academic pursuits abroad.
