IAEA Director: US Military Strikes Complicate Location of Iran’s Enriched Uranium

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi recently discussed the concerning situation surrounding approximately 900 pounds of potentially enriched uranium in Iran. Following U.S. military strikes on key Iranian nuclear sites, including facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, Grossi highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the location of this uranium. During an appearance on Fox News’ “The Story with Martha MacCallum,” he confirmed that the IAEA lacks concrete information regarding where this material might be, noting that Iranian officials claimed it was being moved for protective measures in anticipation of potential strikes on nuclear facilities.

The U.S. military’s precision strikes have aimed to damage critical nodes in Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Grossi indicated that significant damage occurred at Natanz, specifically in one of its centrifuge halls, which is integral to uranium enrichment processes. While Isfahan also experienced damage, the extent of injuries to the facilities had yet to be fully assessed, as on-site inspections were not conducted immediately after the strikes. This lack of information has raised alarms within the international community regarding nuclear non-proliferation and transparency.

In the interview, Grossi responded carefully to inquiries about the whereabouts of the enriched uranium. He emphasized that the IAEA operates on facts, not speculation, underlining the agency’s need for precise information. He reiterated that the Iranian government had mentioned taking protective measures but did not confirm what those might entail, which raises questions about whether the uranium is still in the same location. The ambiguity surrounding the uranium’s status necessitates resuming IAEA inspection activities to ascertain the material’s location and situation.

Grossi acknowledged the relevance of recent comments by U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who suggested that if Iran possesses uranium enriched to 60% but lacks the capability to enrich it to the 90% mark commonly associated with weaponization, then it cannot yet create a nuclear weapon. Grossi expressed agreement with this perspective, indicating that a military approach might find semblances of success here. However, he maintained that his responsibilities focus on tracking uranium’s whereabouts and ensuring accountability in Iran’s nuclear activities.

Despite the observed limitations in Iran’s current enrichment capabilities, Grossi remained firm that it is critical to locate and account for every gram of uranium in Iran. His role transcends military assessments, as he aims to ensure that Iran adheres to its obligations to report and manage its nuclear materials responsibly. The agency’s mandate is to uphold international agreements and promote transparency regarding nuclear activities, ensuring that no nation can clandestinely pursue weapons capabilities.

The importance of maintaining vigilant oversight over Iran’s nuclear program has never been more vital. Grossi’s commitment to ensuring accountability reflects the broader international concern over potential nuclear proliferation in the Middle East. The IAEA’s ability to perform inspections is crucial in maintaining the integrity of nuclear agreements and averting crises that could arise from misunderstandings or covert operations. As the situation evolves, the IAEA’s transparent actions will play a pivotal role in addressing global concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
