I’m a Proud Plus-Size Traveler: Why I Skip Bigger Seats on Planes, Despite Upsetting Other Passengers

Navigating air travel as a plus-size individual can present significant challenges, as highlighted by influencer Kirsty Leanne. At 29, Leanne has opened up about her experiences with cramped airline seating, narrow aisles, and the discomfort that frequently arises during flights. Despite many opting for extra seating as a remedy, Leanne explains that this isn’t a practical or accessible solution for everyone and emphasizes that the issue of space on planes isn’t a one-size-fits-all dilemma. Her candid approach reflects the broader struggles that larger travelers face, particularly in an industry that often overlooks their needs.

Leanne, the founder of Plus Sized Travel Too, advocates for greater inclusivity within the travel sector. She has been vocal about the “emotional damage” caused by airlines, hotels, and other travel-related businesses that fail to accommodate heavier passengers. Despite her constructive criticism aimed at making travel more inclusive, she has encountered backlash from fatphobic individuals. Critics around the internet have trivialized her concerns, suggesting that she simply book two seats or refrain from flying altogether, which underscores a deep-seated stigma against larger bodies.

In response, Leanne delivered a detailed explanation of why booking an extra seat can be prohibitively expensive and often fraught with complications. Many travelers might not be able to justify the additional cost, especially when there’s uncertainty about whether the extra seat will actually enhance their travel experience. Additionally, the inconsistency in airline policies regarding extra seating can add layers of frustration. Leanne has shared instances where airlines’ customer service representatives were unaware of processes for booking an extra seat, leading to confusion and anxiety during travel.

The complexity of this issue is exacerbated by airlines’ tendencies to sell the second seat, meant for the larger passenger, to standby travelers—putting those who purchase extra space in precarious situations. Changes to aircraft configurations and the lack of standardized practices related to larger passengers can leave travelers feeling vulnerable and uncertain about their arrangements. While Leanne recognizes that some people benefit from booking an additional seat, she strongly believes that it should not be viewed as a universal solution for all plus-size customers.

Despite her attempts to educate her audience about the difficulties of air travel for those who are plus-sized, online detractors have continued to spew harmful comments, reinforcing societal biases against larger individuals. Comments have ranged from shaming her financial choices to misguided suggestions about weight loss as a means to avoid the issue of seating space. Such negativity highlights the stigma that persists around body size and reinforces the unjust expectation that heavier individuals should navigate these challenges without support.

Fortunately, not all reactions have been negative. Leanne’s supporters have spoken out, emphasizing the need for greater understanding and empathy toward passengers of various body types. This calls attention to the fact that discomfort on flights is not exclusive to plus-size individuals; tall travelers, parents with children, and older adults can also struggle with limited space. In closing, it becomes clear that the airline industry must begin recognizing the diverse needs of all passengers to foster an inclusive and accommodating travel experience.
