iPhone ‘Flip’: Apple’s Foldable Device Expected to Launch in 2026

Foldable phones have evolved significantly as we’ve entered the fifth year since their introduction, with key players like Samsung, Google, and Motorola offering a wide array of flexible-screen devices. In contrast, Apple remains absent in this rapidly growing segment. Current models, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the new Motorola Razr Plus, feature sophisticated designs and resilient bending displays, solidifying Android’s dominance in the foldable market. Although rumors persist about Apple developing its own foldable device—tentatively dubbed the iPhone Flip—no official announcements have been made. Instead, Apple’s recent innovations have centered largely on artificial intelligence, particularly the implementation of AI capabilities in their latest iPhone 16 series and iOS 18.

Amidst speculation regarding the iPhone Flip, there are indications that Apple is also exploring foldable technology for other devices, like the iPad and MacBook. However, industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that challenges in creating dependable foldable displays could delay production until 2027 or 2028. While whispers about the iPhone Flip suggest a launch could happen as early as 2026, uncertainties linger regarding whether Apple will shift its focus toward this project from their current emphasis on AI. Recent reports indicate that Apple has moved beyond the conceptual phase of the iPhone Flip, assigning it an internal code name, “the V68,” thereby hinting at potential advancements in its development.

Kuo’s projections suggest a dual approach—both a book-style foldable with a larger display and possibly a clamshell model, similar to other market offerings. He predicts that Apple may be preparing to manufacture 15-20 million units for 2026, indicating a confident entry into the foldable market. However, many critical components remain unfinalized, potentially pushing back the timeline. Although the foldable iPhone is rumored to feature a crease-free inner display and two external screens, manufacturing hurdles tied to the hinge design could also affect release expectations. Kuo’s positive shipment estimates follow previous reports indicating that foldable sales are generally low, highlighting confidence in Apple’s brand strength even amidst market challenges.

The patent Apple secured for a folding device confirms its long-standing interest in this type of technology, showing that Apple’s journey into foldables isn’t new. The granted patent reveals details on a flexible display design but falls short of revealing a finalized product appearance. Most notably, the patent implies that Apple is exploring various potential designs, including different device types, and outlines features expected in such foldable devices. The difficulties associated with developing a reliable, crease-free display continue to be a pivotal concern. Persistent challenges with the visible crease present in existing foldable models have traditionally deterred consummate device design and consumer acceptance.

Analysts also speculate on further developments beyond the iPhone Flip. Some reports suggest Apple has paused iPhone Flip development to prioritize a future folding iPad, targeting a display size similar to the iPad Mini, further complicating the timeline. Both devices face stringent design and durability requirements, particularly as Apple aims to create a thinner, more refined device. Apple’s engineering team reportedly desires a foldable iPhone that is half the thickness of current models while still featuring external displays—elements that contribute to design complexity.

While speculation regarding a foldable device has persisted for years, the timeline has been consistently pushed further into the future. Analysts are cautious in forecasting release dates due to Apple’s high performance standards, especially considering the complexity of creating a seamless experience in the foldable category. Balancing costs is also crucial, as foldable phones generally carry a price premium. Although some consumers express interest in foldables, an Apple presence in this market could potentially shift consumer behavior, heightening expectations around usability, reliability, and price competitiveness. Whether Apple’s eventual entrance into the folding segment meets fan anticipation remains an ongoing narrative in the tech community.
