Former U.S. gymnast Jennifer Sey participated in a debate with pro-transgender activist Kevin Bolling over the topic of trans athletes in women’s sports. The debate, sponsored by the Steamboat Institute, took place at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Pre- and post-debate data showed that Sey’s stance against trans athletes in women’s sports seemed to be the winning argument, with a shift in opinion from the audience from 85% disagreeing with allowing trans athletes to 90% after the debate. Sey argued that she did not want to use the term “biological woman” in the debate, insisting that there is only one type of woman based on reality.

Sey cited multiple statistics throughout the debate regarding physical advantages that males have over females, as well as a United Nations study that found nearly 900 biological females missed out on victories due to being defeated by transgender athletes. She emphasized that sports are meant to be exclusive for the sake of competitiveness, rather than inclusive to any particular group. In contrast, Bolling’s argument focused on advancing transgender rights as a whole, comparing the issue of trans inclusion in women’s sports to past civil rights movements such as the fight for women’s suffrage, racial segregation, and ending slavery.

Bolling acknowledged that supporting trans inclusion in women’s sports was not a popular stance at the moment but argued that civil rights should not be a popularity contest. He emphasized the importance of advocating for equality and rights for all individuals, including transgender individuals. The debate sparked discussions on the challenges of creating a fair and inclusive environment in sports while also maintaining a level playing field for all athletes. Sey’s emphasis on biological reality and fairness in competition resonated with the audience, leading to a shift in opinion on the topic of trans athletes in women’s sports.

The debate highlighted the complexity of addressing transgender inclusion in sports and the varying perspectives on the topic. While Sey focused on the physical advantages that males may have over females in sports, Bolling highlighted the importance of advocating for transgender rights and equality. The discussion served as a platform to debate and explore the intersection of gender identity, fairness in competition, and inclusivity in sports. The differing opinions presented in the debate shed light on the ongoing debate surrounding the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports and the broader implications for the future of sports and civil rights movements.

Overall, the debate between Sey and Bolling underscored the complexities and nuances of the issue of trans athletes in women’s sports. It sparked conversations about fairness, inclusivity, and the rights of transgender individuals in sports. The shifting opinions of the audience before and after the debate indicated the impact of the arguments presented by Sey and Bolling on the perception of trans inclusion in women’s sports. The debate served as a platform to discuss and challenge societal norms and beliefs surrounding gender identity, sports, and rights, highlighting the importance of continued dialogue and understanding on these issues.
