Researchers have created an ultra-thin gold sheet measuring only one atom in thickness

Researchers have achieved a groundbreaking feat by creating a free-standing sheet of gold that is only one atom thick, known as goldene. This development could potentially reduce the amount of gold needed in electronics and chemical reactions, making goldene a more cost-effective option compared to thicker, three-dimensional gold. Goldene also holds promise as a catalyst with unique properties similar to other two-dimensional materials.

The process of creating goldene involved first making a three-dimensional material called titanium gold carbide, which contains two-dimensional sheets of gold. The researchers then etched away the surrounding material using a potassium-based solution, leaving behind the thin goldene sheets. However, one challenge they faced was ensuring that the goldene sheets remained flat, as they had a tendency to curl up like a scroll. To address this issue, the team added a surfactant to the etching solution to keep the sheets flat as they floated.

The successful creation of goldene opens up new possibilities for making 2-D sheets of other metals, such as iridium and platinum, using a similar etching approach. This groundbreaking research represents a significant step forward in the field of materials science, offering potential applications in various industries, particularly in the development of advanced catalysts and electronic devices. The team’s innovative work demonstrates the power of exploring new materials at the atomic level to unlock unique properties and applications.
