Sophie Cunningham Criticizes DeWanna Bonner Over Fever Departure: “Be Prepared for Booing”

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham recently tackled the controversial departure of former teammate DeWanna Bonner, who left the team after just nine games this season, citing “personal reasons.” The Fever attempted to trade Bonner before she was ultimately released on June 29. Bonner, who had previously spent her career with the Phoenix Mercury before her stint with the Fever, returned to her original team. Cunningham, who has a longstanding relationship with Bonner, praised her skills as a player but expressed disappointment over what she perceived as a lack of professionalism in how Bonner handled her departure.

In a candid discussion on her podcast, Cunningham emphasized the importance of communication among teammates, suggesting that Bonner could have reached out before leaving. She believed it would have shown a level of respect to her former teammates by sending a simple message wishing them well. Despite her criticisms, Cunningham maintained a supportive stance, indicating she still wants Bonner to find happiness in her career, especially as she approaches the end of her playing days.

Upon returning to Indianapolis, Bonner faced a hostile reception from fans, receiving boos during her appearance. Cunningham remarked that given the circumstances of Bonner’s departure, it was not unexpected that fans would react negatively. She acknowledged Bonner’s talent and legacy, noting that while she deserves happiness, athletes should be prepared for scrutiny when leaving a team under contentious circumstances.

Kahleah Copper, a star player for the Mercury, also addressed the reception Bonner received from Fever fans. Although she recognized Bonner’s resilience in dealing with the booing, Copper expressed confusion about why fans would treat a legendary player that way. She pointed out Bonner’s significant contributions to women’s basketball and described the booing as disrespectful, indicating that it was out of line given Bonner’s legacy in the sport.

Copper defended Bonner as not only an exceptional player but also as a kind person, criticizing the harsh reaction from some fans. She stated that such treatment was unnecessary and argued that Bonner’s situation was not a reflection of her character or contributions to the league. Copper’s support for Bonner highlights the strong camaraderie among players, who often stand together in the face of adversity.

Both Cunningham and Copper’s comments illustrate the complexities of professional sports, where relationships, fan perceptions, and player transitions can evoke strong emotions. Their perspectives on Bonner reflect not only their respect for her talent and character but also raise questions about how players are treated during transitions in their careers. As the WNBA continues to evolve, discussions around professionalism, respect, and fandom remain critical for the growth of the league.
