“Squad” Members and GOP Lawmaker Unite to Oppose U.S. Involvement in Israel-Iran Conflict

Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, is spearheading a bipartisan effort to prevent U.S. military involvement in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. Massie, known for his conservative stance on fiscal matters, has teamed up with Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California to introduce a War Powers Resolution. Massie emphasizes that this conflict does not concern the U.S. and insists that any decision to engage militarily should lie with Congress, per constitutional guidelines. His call to action welcomes colleagues from both parties to co-sponsor the resolution, which has quickly gained traction, drawing support from notable members of the progressive “Squad,” as well as right-wing figures like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The core of the proposed War Powers Resolution is to remove U.S. Armed Forces from unauthorized hostilities involving Iran. The bill mandates that President Trump must cease troop deployment against Iran unless formally authorized by Congress. Lawmakers vocally opposing U.S. military engagement cite constitutional grounds, arguing that only Congress has the authority to declare war. Khanna echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need to safeguard Americans from being drawn into another conflict in the Middle East and asserting that military actions must be approved by legislative bodies.

As tensions mount, President Trump has been vague about his potential military actions against Iran, stating, “Yes, I may do it. I may not do it.” His remarks came as he reiterated a hardline stance on Iran, demanding “unconditional surrender.” Despite the apparent escalation, Trump indicated restraint concerning targeting specific Iranian leaders but warned that U.S. patience was dwindling. The conflict reached a critical point with ongoing military strikes between Israel and Iran, involving Israel’s preemptive actions against Iranian nuclear facilities, which Iran has labeled as acts of war.

Iran has responded aggressively to Israeli actions, emphasizing that U.S. support for Israel could lead to “all-out war.” The ongoing hostilities have seen Israel targeting Iran’s nuclear sites amid escalating concerns over Iran’s nuclear weapons development potential. Israeli military operations have intensified after failed negotiations with Iran, reinforcing their strategic objectives in the region. Meanwhile, the Iranian government maintains that it will continue to enrich uranium for peaceful uses, despite being a major target of Israeli military strikes.

With thousands of U.S. troops stationed near Iran, the situation poses significant risk factors for American forces in the region. Trump asserts that U.S. air control over Iranian skies is “complete and total,” but the reality of the ongoing conflict raises concerns about the potential for U.S. involvement. The rising tensions compel lawmakers to navigate the complexities of foreign policy while insisting on adherence to constitutional mandates regarding war powers.

The bipartisan coalition is a rare convergence of progressive and conservative lawmakers united against what they view as unnecessary military engagement. The War Powers Resolution stands as a critical statement not only about current U.S. foreign policy but also about the broader implications of executive military action without Congressional approval. As the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, the resolution reflects ongoing debates about the role of Congress in military conflicts and the importance of a unified legislative voice against war.
