According to a recent Gallup poll, President Biden has received low rankings from Americans compared to his three White House predecessors in terms of national defense, the military, immigration, federal debt, and other policy markers. Despite Biden’s claims of having a competent foreign policy team and leaving behind a strong economy, the survey results show that he falls below Presidents Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush on various important issues.
Biden was rated far below his predecessors in terms of national defense and the military, with a net negative of -19%, while Trump scored +25%, Obama -9%, and Bush +3%. Many Americans believe that under Biden, the US has lost ground on national defense, particularly given his handling of the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan and the incident with a Chinese spy balloon flying over the US.
The survey also revealed that a majority of Americans believe that Biden fell backward on immigration, with 51% feeling this way compared to lower percentages for Bush, Trump, and Obama. Even though Biden claims that the number of migrants at the border went down when he became president, the survey data shows that the number surged during his first three years in office.
On addressing the federal debt, Biden received the lowest ratings among his predecessors, with a net negative of -56%. This is worse than Obama’s -36% and Trump’s -45% ratings. The only area where Biden received a net positive rating was on the situation for gay, lesbian, and transgender people, with a rating of 16%.
While Biden outperformed Bush on the US’s position in the world and the economy, he barely surpassed Obama’s rating on crime, with a -32% net negative rating. Trump received the best rating among the last four presidents on crime at -13%. The survey results come as Biden is set to leave office on January 20th for the inauguration of President Trump.
A separate Gallup poll found that more than half of Americans expect Biden to be remembered as a “poor” to “below average” commander in chief. The survey revealed that 37% believe he will be regarded as a “below average” president, while 17% think of him as a “poor” leader. A small percentage of respondents believe Biden will be remembered as an “outstanding” president, while others expect him to be viewed as just an “average” leader in history.
