The Muslim community in Calgary comes together to observe Ramadan and aid food bank efforts

The fifth annual community suhur event took place at the Rajveer Banquet Hall in northeast Calgary, with the aim of giving back in a big way during the month of Ramadan. Host Shaukat Hayat expressed the high spirits that come with the month of Ramadan and announced plans to collect 10,000 pounds of food for the Calgary Food Bank. Already, 2,500 to 3,000 pounds of food have been collected. The suhur event, which took place from Saturday night until Sunday morning, attracted more than 7,000 people who enjoyed browsing stalls of local businesses, sampling food from local restaurants, and partaking in on-site entertainment. Hayat described the event as a food-tasting festival, where restaurants from across the town served their best dishes to the public for free.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until dusk, breaking their fast with two meals – the suhur and the iftar. The community suhur event provided an opportunity for attendees to enjoy a variety of foods while coming together to support the Calgary Food Bank. In addition to collecting non-perishable food items, organizers also hoped to gather $5,000 in cash donations. The event showcased the generosity and community spirit of those participating in Ramadan, with a focus on giving back to those in need.
