This Emoji Became the Most Popular New Emoji, but It Was Never Truly a Competition

Emoji have become an integral part of online communication, with World Emoji Day celebrated annually on July 17, aligning with the date depicted on the calendar emoji. Emojipedia, a comprehensive directory of emojis and their meanings, enhances this celebration by announcing awards for various categories, including the most popular new emoji and lifetime achievement awards. This year, the standout winner for Most Popular New Emoji is the face with bags under eyes, which has resonated with many for its relatable expression. The emoji captures a wide range of sentiments, from exhaustion and disillusionment to a humorous acknowledgment of life’s absurdities.

The face with bags under eyes was forecasted to take the top honor from the outset due to its universal relatability. Its victory resulted in speculations about which emoji would claim second and third place positions, with the splatter emoji and shovel emoji trailing behind, respectively. The splatter emoji, characterized by a purple splash of liquid, might be employed innocently in artistic contexts but is likely to manifest more humorously in dating apps. The shovel emoji, while seemingly straightforward, hints at darker undertones, such as metaphorically “burying” someone in a contentious exchange.

In a more nostalgic vein, the Emoji Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes the melting face emoji. Introduced in 2021, it quickly became emblematic of collective feelings related to pandemic fatigue and anxiety. The melting face’s versatility has been celebrated, appearing on popular media platforms and resonating with users for a myriad of emotional contexts, from summer heat to crisis-induced humor, illustrating its ability to effectively convey complex emotions.

Looking ahead, Emojipedia has detailed upcoming emoji slated for release in Emoji 17.0, featuring options such as an orca, a Sasquatch, and a cartoonish fight cloud. However, the award for Most Anticipated Emoji of 2025 belongs to the distorted face, an unsettling representation reminiscent of views through a fisheye lens. While this emoji has garnered attention, its aesthetic leaves some users, including myself, less enthusiastic, especially with the orca emoji catching my interest due to its cultural implications and recent media presence.

The fascination with emojis extends beyond mere decoration; they serve as a compact means of expressing nuanced emotions and thoughts. Emojis like the face with bags under eyes reflect common human experiences, revealing how technology has shaped our communication styles. The ongoing evolution of emojis encapsulates societal shifts and trends, allowing users to articulate sentiments that might otherwise be challenging to express verbally.

As we anticipate the arrival of new emojis, it’s clear that these digital symbols will continue to play a vital role in our interactions, reflecting our daily lives and cultural phenomena. From award-winning designs to those that stir up excitement for future releases, emojis not only enhance our conversations but also invite us to participate in a broader community dialogue about feelings, experiences, and societal changes. Emojis, in all their forms, are here to stay, reflecting the moods and moments of our contemporary lives.
