Trump ally delighted by president’s endorsement in Florida governor race: ‘it’s a great advantage’

Republican Rep. Byron Donalds recently kicked off his 2026 campaign for Florida governor and is the only major Republican candidate to have entered the race so far. He is a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump and received Trump’s endorsement when he announced his candidacy on Fox News’ “Hannity”. Donalds emphasized the importance of Trump’s endorsement, highlighting the success of candidates supported by the former president in the past. He vowed to campaign vigorously across Florida to secure the governorship.

In response to speculation about a potential run by Florida’s first lady, Casey DeSantis, for governor in 2026, Donalds expressed confidence in his own vision and mission for the state. He maintained that races take on a life of their own and that his focus would be on Florida’s future prosperity. The congressman’s political orbit predicted that Donalds would surpass the fundraising numbers of Governor Ron DeSantis in his own campaign for governor. This support was echoed by Florida-based Republican strategists, who anticipated a strong showing of support for Donalds.

Amidst his campaign kickoff rally in Bonita Springs, demonstrators protested both Donalds and the Trump administration’s policies. The event coincided with concerns in the White House and Capitol Hill over upcoming special congressional elections in Florida. Republicans were working to maintain control over solidly red districts, despite Democratic candidates having a fundraising advantage in some races. Donalds expressed optimism about the GOP’s chances in these elections, believing Republican voters would turn out in support of the party’s candidates.

In the upcoming special elections for Florida’s 1st and 6th Congressional Districts, Republicans faced a fundraising disparity and close polling margins against Democratic candidates. The GOP currently held a slim majority in the House, with two vacant seats. Donalds predicted a potential challenge for maintaining the GOP majority if one of the seats in Florida flipped. Despite the cash discrepancy between Republican and Democratic candidates, party leaders were confident in their chances to secure victories in these districts and ensure their majority in the House.

The race in Florida’s 1st Congressional District featured Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis as the favored Republican candidate against Democrat Gay Valimont. Meanwhile, in the 6th Congressional District, concerns arose over the fundraising abilities of Republican candidate Randy Fine against his Democratic opponent, teacher Josh Weil. While Weil garnered national attention for his fundraising success, outside groups stepped in to support Fine. Despite the challenges, Republican leaders remained optimistic about their prospects in both races and vowed to secure victories on election day.

In conclusion, Byron Donalds’ campaign kickoff for the Florida governorship marked the beginning of what is shaping up to be a competitive political landscape in the state. With potential challenges from both within the Republican Party and from Democratic opponents, Donalds and his supporters are gearing up for a tough race to secure the governorship. The upcoming special congressional elections in Florida will be critical in determining the GOP’s ability to maintain control of the House. As the political climate evolves leading up to the 2026 elections, candidates like Donalds will continue to navigate the complex terrain of Florida politics in an effort to secure victory.
