During Hurricane Helene, Tennessee state trooper Hannah Smathers displayed immense bravery during a rescue mission, which was captured on video. Smathers had been finishing a crash report when a call came in to check flood-prone roadways, which is a common occurrence during severe weather. Despite initially manageable conditions, Smathers found herself in a precarious situation as floodwaters quickly rose around her patrol vehicle. However, she remained calm, radioed for help, and assisted pedestrians and a stranded driver before becoming trapped herself.

As the floodwaters continued to rise, Smathers called for help and was eventually rescued by a water rescue team who tossed her a rope to pull her to safety. She was forced to remove her vest, belt, and other gear in order to escape her stranded vehicle. Once safely out of the water, Smathers immediately went back to helping others, including carrying a driver with a broken ankle to safety. Despite being trapped earlier and still covered in mud, she stayed on shift for the next 18 hours, exemplifying her dedication to helping others in need.

Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Jeff Long commended Smathers for her actions, stating that her bravery and dedication reflect the values that all troopers strive to uphold. Colonel Matt Perry of the Tennessee Highway Patrol also praised Smathers for remaining calm under pressure and displaying a heart for service. Smathers’ actions during the Hurricane Helene rescue mission showcase the dedication and courage that state troopers bring to their communities every day.

Hurricane Helene caused extensive damage in Tennessee, including the destruction of homes, farms, and critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and power lines. Parts of highways connecting North Carolina and Tennessee have been closed since late September due to the storm. In North Carolina alone, more than 100 people lost their lives as a result of the hurricane, with a total death count exceeding 230 across six states including South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Georgia, and Florida.

The Tennessee state troopers, including Trooper Hannah Smathers, played a vital role in assisting and ensuring the safety of individuals during the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s devastation. Smathers’ heroic actions during the rescue mission exemplify the selflessness and dedication that law enforcement officers exhibit in the face of emergencies and disasters. Despite the risks and challenges she faced, Smathers remained focused on helping those in need and ensuring the safety and well-being of her community. Her courage and commitment to service serve as a reminder of the invaluable contributions that troopers make to their communities every day.
